“The Meath Intermediate cross country championships were held at the Cow Park course in Dunboyne on Sunday morning as Hurricane Clodagh buffeted the runners around the open fields.

Ciara Rooney is an athlete in top form at the moment and herself, Shauna Moran from Dunshaughlin and Geraldine Gill from Bohermeen opened up a gap on the ladies Intermediate  field after 1k of the 4k trip. Ciara pushed on the pace and got 30 metres on Shauna who had a similar gap to Geraldine and that’s the way it stayed to the line as 21 year old Ciara added the Intermediate title to the County novice she won back in October. Shauna Moran was pleased with her run in 2nd as was Geraldine Gill who is a constant regular on the racing scene. Dunboyne won the team title convincingly on 17 points from Bohermeen on 25 points with Fr Murphys 3rd on 29 points.

The winds hadn’t relented as the men took off for their 8k trip with Dunshaughlin pair Ciaran O’Dwyer and Mick Summerville, the Dunboyne duo of Derek Finnegan and Alan Kelly and Richie Bell from Fr Murphys opened up a big gap on the field after 2k. This bunch stayed together until O’Dwyer kicked on the 3rd of 5 laps to open 40 metres on Summerville as Bell started to make inroads onto the leaders with a lap to go. The incredible tough wind saw many runners tiring considerably but O’Dwyer had just enough strength to hold off Bell who finished like a train for 2nd with marathon man Summerville so happy to be racing again taking the bronze medal.

The Dunboyne men’s team made it a team double with a convincing win by placing 4th, 5th , 6th and 7th to win the Betty and Rory McDonnell cup on 22 points with Fr Murphy’s 2nd

Fr Murphys 2nd on 38 points and Dunshaughlin 3rd on 41 points.

The series of underage cross country relays saw a massive turnout of 66 teams compete in the 8 races.

I attach the list of medal winners. – Full results will be mailed shortly.

Congratulations to all who took part and our thanks to Dunboyne AC for their hard work in getting the course ready under such adverse weather conditions”.
